Hub on Wheels

My friend Nicole asked me to let you know about this event:

Coming up in September is one of those events that helps define Boston as the truly unique city that it is — Boston’s only citywide bike ride & festival:

Mayor Thomas M. Menino's Hub On Wheels
Citywide Bike Ride & Festival Sunday, September 23, 2007

For one day in September, bikes rule in Boston. It’s a chance for us to get together and explore the greenways and the shoreline, the neighborhoods and the communities of Boston. Riders can choose from a 25- or 45- mile loop with food and support provided along the way. Plus, many streets will be closed off to traffic—imagine being able to ride down Storrow Drive with no cars to get in your way.

A great cause. A fabulous time. Your participation in Hub on Wheels will support the Boston Digital Bridge Foundation, an organization that brings technology and its benefits to Boston Public School students and their families.

Please, sign up now. So pump up those tires and get ready to ride. The first 100 people to register will receive free Hub on Wheels T-Shirts. But the important thing is that you get out there on September 23rd and have some fun and help raise money for a good cause.

To register, go to http://www.hubonwheels.org/, or send questions to Nicole.Freedman.bra@cityofboston.gov.

After much thought, and reading your blog since its inception, I have added you to my list of people I would like to meet in my lifetime. You discuss so many varied topics that I can only imagine how having a face to face discussion with you would be both educative and invigorating. The only problem is how I would be able to convince your assistants that all I want is to say hello and to shake your hand. And then to fit into your schedule…

Pthththt.

Another one day dog and pony show to avoid doing anything at all substantial. This is still one of the most dangerous cities to cycle in and the mayor does nothing about it, and even obstructs any sort of progress.

The city's bicycle liaison? Laid off over five years ago and has never been replaced in spite of repeated promises.

Why is this event supporting "digital bridge" and not something cycling or health related? Cycling in a town with sky high asthma rates? Try cycling down Huntington Ave or Blue Hill Ave and remaining alive. Try crossing River Street or Western Ave without getting run over.

How about fixing a friggin pothole?!?!

All show. No substance.
