Following up on an earlier post about a St. Thomas charoset recipe, here is an article on salon.com written by my daughter Sarah about the family recipe(s) for Panamanian wedding cake.

Sarah - your essay is the sweetest thing I've read in a long time. I could smell the brandy right through the blog! Enjoy the wedding, and toast to Emita from your cyber-family.
Hi Paul,
I bake a mean black cake, otherwise known as Christmas cake or Grooms cake. Straight from the Caribbean...my husband is Gyanese. This cake and a strong cup of coffee and you are in heaven.Sounds similar. I'll send you the recipe.
Family traditions are a wonderful thing. Connecting to our roots..magical!
Sounds great! Thanks very much. We can post it here if you'd be willing.
her descriptions of her cake baking experience definitely made me hungry!
best line of the article: I smiled to think of my dad in his maroon, bell-bottom groom's suit and my mother with ironed-straight hair down to her waist.
lol
