Natural prayer flags
Like some kind of Tibetan prayer flags, these beech leaves from last fall have hung on to their branches all winter long. Seen at Rocky Narrows, a Trustees of Reservation property in Sherborn, MA.

The phenomenon of keeping the leaves is called marcesance, most common in juveniles of all the species that do it, and no one can agree on why!
