A lesson in patience

Take five minutes for this first of two videos.  I think many of us can identify with the emotions.  It has been around for a while, but was just sent to me by a colleague and friend.

Now, take slightly longer to watch another one.  Jim Conway notes:

I’ve just finished watching an exceptional, overwhelming, inspirational video, The House of Gort. The House of Gort is the story of a family with two special needs daughters following a medical accident that would forever change their family dynamic. I recommend it for a number of reasons. First it illustrates the exceptional care and caring that goes on in this family, and so many others, every minute of every day. “Engaging” patients and families in care is new cutting edge language for many in healthcare. But for many patients, families, and other care givers dealing with special needs and chronic illness, they have known about “engaging” and have been able to teach “engagement” for a long time. It is also the vivid portrayal of the long-term burden of harm and the degree of respectfulness of practice after an event. Finally, this 16 minute video showcases the power of the story, the narrative, to confront the gap between the bold aims we set and the realities of our practice. The tension that arises in the gap must be put to good use and improvement.

Here it is:

  1. This posting touched me especially, and I just wanted to say thank you. There are far too many emotions running through me to say more than that for now. But in time I am sure to process better. Suffice it to say, but for the grace of God go we.
