Heads up, Angelinos. You are not going to like this one.
I have heard of lots of promotions to encourage people to attend sporting events. For example, certain restaurants in Minneapolis offer coupons for Minnesota Twins games when you buy a meal.
But here is the best yet, from a friend of a friend:
I know you think I've gone soft livin' in LA instead of with you on Beacon Hill, but I just wanted to tell you two recent giveaway promotions at Dodger stadium which prove that we are a fierce, fightin' machine:
May 13: (I was there and might be able to track down an extra one for you if you want) Lip Gloss Giveaway -- First 25,000 -- Sponsored by Smashbox.
Also, May 22: "Dodger fans are invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Dodger Stitch 'n Pitch where fans will sit together and knit. There will be a teaching table prior to the event and a totebag giveaway to those participating in the Stitch 'n Pitch."
I don't want this to sound really snitty or snobby, but the idea that you would have to give a Red Sox fan something extra to go to Fenway Park is inconceivable. If they did a give-away, the likelihood of it being lip gloss is very, very small. As for knitting, I would fear for the public's safety if that kind of implement were available during a Red Sox-Yankee game.
While no one has to offer me an incentive to go to a Red Sox game (unless seeing Big Papi hit a home run in person counts), I have been known to knit at the game.

Aha, a member of KA. . .
ReplyDeleteIn high school, a friend's mother used to knit during the kids' basketball games with metal needles. You could tell how exciting the game was by the speed of the clicking!
Were I to frequent sporting events (not something I do at the moment) I'd probably take my knitting. It's better to keep your hands busy than eating.
ReplyDeleteThe advertising of a lip gloss as a way to bring people in does seem a little excessive. Still--perhaps a t-shirt "So and So went to a ball game and all I got was a lip gloss?"
the only stitches at the Sox Yankees game should have been on A-Rod's elbow-----Schilling can thread a needle
ReplyDeleteLove the baseball posts. Now, say it with me... "World Champion St. Louis Cardinals."
ReplyDeleteI know the Cards got spanked by the Sox a few years back and they are not doing so hot this year, but for the rest of the season I still want to hear it. Say it again... "World Champion St. Louis Cardinals." Man that sounds great.
In St. Louis, we mainly give away bobble heads and baseball cards.
St. Louis fans, being midwesterners, were polite and congratulatory to Boston fans in the stadium when the Sox won the last game in the Series. For that reason alone, they deserve to be called champions.
ReplyDelete1. Back before you were a baseball fan (1999), the Red Sox had regular giveaways. In fact, I have a little Wally the Monster doll that I got for free. They also used to have half-price ticket nights, which I really, really miss.
ReplyDelete2. More than 50% of Red Sox fans are women. Lipgloss doesn't seem that weird...okay, yes it does. Still. Smashbox is pretty expensive. I'd love to go to a game and get something from them for free!
I was always a baseball fan. For the sake of personal safety, however, I dare not reveal my previous loyalties.
ReplyDeleteLet's see YOU come up with a way to convince people to sit outside for several hours in Southern California during the summertime.
ReplyDeleteApparently the knitting thing is not just the Dodgers - I found a Stitch n'Pitch website that lists such events for 23 of the MLB teams this year. But no, no Red Sox or Yankees games among them.
ReplyDeleteThe Wall Street Journal just had a story about how the Dodgers are offering an "all you can eat" section as an experiment to fill more seats.
ReplyDeleteThe Boston market is just strange, even the Lowell Spinners sell out quickly.
But you Bostonians don't realize how lucky you are. I work with a guy here in the Washington area who's a rabid Red Sox and Patriots fan. The year they both won it all, I told him I never wanted to hear any more whining - look who I've got to root for; the Redskins and the Nationals!
