Regular readers know that I have an obsessive interest in infrastructure, city services, and the like. Well, here's a taxi cab meter that I saw today while visiting Washington, DC. Look at the attributes. In addition to a very clear display of the fare, and credit card reader, it has a GPS map of the route you are traveling. You won't always see this if you are in DC. These are only available in Alexandria (VA) based cabs.
In New York City, every cab is equipped with these (as far as I can tell). In Boston we are lucky to be able to find a cab...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of your lingering plannerishness, Karen Polenske told our thesis prep class that yours was the best MCP thesis she can remember.
ReplyDeleteProving only that my dear advisor is having serious memory lapses!
ReplyDeletePMP, yes, but in NYC it is part of a commercial display in the back seat and not nearly as good a map.
ReplyDeleteThis is a significant improvement in DC, from the "ZONE" pricing they just eliminated where the price increased each time you crossed a zone. The set-up of the zones, however, was not very condusive to DC's layout or anything really but a confusing layout that the passenger could not understand. The cab drivers would come up with a different amount every time you took the cab, even if it was the same route, same traffic, time, etc.
