I have written before about a site called Celebrity Diagnosis. Devoted to "teachable moments in medicine," it is well written and informative. Dr. Mark Boguski, in our Department of Pathology, is one of the founders and writers. Here's their list of the 10 most important stories from 2009.

Rick: They don't remove the recipient's old kidneys in a kidney transplant? How odd.
Vijay: Not odd, Rick. It complicates the surgery further to remove both native kidneys. And in quite a few occasions the native kidneys retain a small amount of function. So why lose that?
The transplant kidney is fixed in the right side of the lower abdomen just above the groin skin fold.
