Many thanks to Justin for chatting with me on Facebook about this new life form in a highly trafficked area just outside our ambulatory center in the Longwood Medical Area:
Heads up, a rogue tomato plant is growing outside Shapiro, sidewalk side of the soup or salad patio. It's amazing it survived as long as it has, but it has flowers, and likely will soon have tomatoes, well if it is not kicked, pulled, or weeded.
I surmise that someone dropped a tomato while eating a salad for lunch.
From Facebook:
ReplyDeleteWe should tie it to a post or even to tree for support...
There's another pretty big feral tomato plant between Brookline Ice and Coal and the Brookline animal hospital.
ReplyDeleteI followed the progress of another feral tomato in the area a while ago on my blog:

If we can use the net to catch flashers and so forth, surely we can use it to turn this rogue tomato plant into a celebrity. Let's get someone to put up a stake there and set it up a Twitter account.
ReplyDeleteSomeone should just tie it up to the tree, sure if it was born errantly from a sandwich tomato, it's a hybrid, and not likely gonna produce much of an edible tomato. But life springing up in error is always cool, let it live.
ReplyDeleteI own the landscaping responsibilities so we'll see how long we can keep this alive and from being kicked or picked. No promises however. You might be surprised by how many of our plantings get taken home as souvenirs!
ReplyDeleteGood eye, Justin. When nature does the unexpected, we can all experience some awe.
