A lovely evening event Saturday night -- a fundraising gala for the Jewish Family and Children's Service of Greater Boston. They took the occasion to give their Community Leadership Award to Irving Rabb (shown here) and Melinda and James Rabb. Jim is Irving's son and is a GI doctor affiliated with BIDMC.The family has been known for decades for their personal involvement in and financial support of charities in the Boston area and beyond. In his thank-you remarks, Irving (now 96) related the story of his father saying to him as he entered college, "This community has been good to you. Don't ever forget it." He never did, and neither has his family. (Here's a longer version of the story, written a few years ago.)
An example and a lesson for all of us.
