Why cognitive specialists lose out

His father is a cardiac surgeon. His mother is an internist.

The little boy, aged 3 1/2, is asked by his girlfriend(!), "What do your parents do?"

"My father is a surgeon. He saves people's lives. My mother is just a regular doctor."

also perhaps reflecting the greater social status of men vs women, evident at even this young an age.

That's just good PR on the father's part. I do the same thing in my house.

"My mommy's just a nurse. but my DADDY is a TRANSPLANT COORDINATOR!"

It is not so easy being a cardiac surgeon these days....appearances can be deceiving....(look at the match rate for cardiac surgery programs...)

As a female surgeon married to a cardiologist, so far, it doesn't seem to be gender-specific (5 year old son much more interested in mommy's work, which seems to him to be more violent and therefore interesting. 3 year old daughter prefers balls and sports, so far).
